How a Pet Reading works
I know what it is like to feel super curious about what the process is behind mediums and psychics and, well, strippers. (I have SO many questions for strippers! I can’t be the only one…)
As a medium – which is weird to claim because even in my own head “that word” is reserved for people who are not like me? So yeah. Don’t feel bad if you’re like: “I’m not someone who would hire a medium” because I myself have a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that I am the person you’d hire due to stigma and stereotype. I simply don’t fit it.
But I am learning to embrace this version of me and be super proud of this gift so I figured I would take you along into my world as a pet medium.
First thing is I receive an email saying a form has been submitted. I get excited and then open it to see who is wanting a reading done. Sometimes it’s people I know/know of but it’s also been total strangers living in NYC or Mexico and beyond.
When the time feels right, I go to my desk and start the process. I cleanse my space with Palo Santo, light incense, a candle, and look at the photo of the pet I’m reading. For this example, let’s use a dog.
Once I have the visual in my head, I grab two crystals: apophyllite and danburite; select instrumental meditation music on Insight Timer, and close my eyes….
I’m standing at the top of a grand staircase that’s outdoors. The dog is beside me, on the left and I look at them, they look at me, and a glowy orb is floating above their head. The colour is unique to them and sometimes has flecks of gold or glimmer, or sometimes a shape is swirling around in there…what does this all mean? It’s just a unique signature that helps me connect to them specifically.
This is usually where their personality starts to come out. The pet usually does something at this point in the meditation that is very “them.” I’ve had dog’s hold their paw a certain way, spin circles a certain way, stoic and poised, or egging me on to do something.
We descend the stairs and more of the dog’s personality comes through. The purpose of the stairs, well all of this really, is to get more and more connected to the pet. At the base of the stairs is what I call a Crystal Cottage. It’s a rickity moss growing on old barn wood type structure but when we enter….it’s still rickity and dank. I know – you were probably expecting something grand and elaborate but it’s got the abandoned-witches-lair-in-the-woods feel through and through. This interior changes a bit – why? Who knows why any of this is happening! But there’s crystals in this cottage and so during this part of the meditation I’ll grab my crystal card deck and shuffle asking “what crystals do you need” and 3 cards will pop out but I’ll look at them later. Then, sometimes going through the same door we came in, but also sometimes a different door, we exit out of the Crystal Cottage and into my Meditation Meadow.
This space is like….enchanted forest meets meticulously maintained lawn? The trees surround it the space are very enchanted with vines hanging down, very dense, but it’s like the tree line creates a horse shoe that surrounds the mowed grass. When the dog and I enter this space, there’s a canopy overhead with tiled floor like it’s some Indiana Jones discovery that then opens up to this vast space.
Sometimes there’s a Past Life Well that appears, sometimes there’s a swing, but there’s always a bench. Concrete bench with no back that I have for real life in my yard. Sometime between first entering this space and me sitting on this bench, the dog is doing their thing. I’m observing it all taking mental notes and then the Spirit Animals arrive.
Usually they’re very obvious, like an eagle flying above the sky, or a giraffe that moseys out of the forest and is grazing on some leaves. Sometimes they appear and once I acknowledge it’s there, like “huh. Ok a turtle.” It’s gone. Mostly the pets I’m reading leave the animals alone – like they’re in an agreement. What’s cool about the Spirit Animals is they’re messengers for the human. Not the pet.
I’ll watch the dog do dog things, sometimes people come through that I have no idea who or what they represent but I take note anyways and when I’m feeling ready, we’ll leave the meditation and I’ll open my eyes to pull cards.
The deck is usually cleansed (by way of Palo Santo or sage) prior to meditating and I usually use the same deck every time. Although, there are two others that I’ll feel pulled to and if so – that’s the route I’m going.
My method is I’ll actively shuffle and say the question out loud like: “Ok, Nana, why are you in Wendy’s life?” and the first card that pops out, or is sticking out further than the rest, is the answer.
It has taken me a loooooong time to trust the cards. Especially on questions that are more specific because I used to see the card and think: does this even make sense? There had been times where I’ve asked the Q, got a card that I THOUGHT WAS NOT RIGHT, put it back in the deck, shuffled and asked again. What card came out? Same card! Shit there’s even been times when I’ve grabbed a different DECK to try and get a different answer (like I would fool it…or something?) and the same theme or, if it were tarot, the same damn card comes. So, I’ve learned to cut that out.
I go through all the questions the dog’s human picked and start seeing a theme present itself. Whether it’s have more joy, trust your instincts, pay attention to who you’re surrounding yourself with, whatever….and what’s more interesting is the animal messengers from the meditation usually align with it all too.
Of course, there’s questions like “what your pet loves,” “what your pet fears,” “how to help your pet” etc. and sometimes those are very pet specific answers but usually it goes back to the human to bring awareness. For example: if the card representing chaos got pulled for what they fear, what is getting presented in their day to day that is chaotic? If the human has asked “What do you need to be happy” and the card that comes forward is “Family,” I would already have a sense for what they mean based off the rest of the reading, but the pet could be communicating that the family is busy and not making time to be with each other.
So, I’ve asked all the questions, interpreted the cards, got all my notes, I then record the video. Each reading is shared via video recording (about 20 minutes long), and I take the human behind the pet through a step by step of what I saw, felt, heard etc. in the meditation and then get into the cards. Each of the questions is discussed in detail – unless the pet was very straight forward and some are so black and white with some answers, it’s really quite funny.
Once the video is finished, I attach it into a beautiful PDF document with some reading insights, recap of questions, the crystals they picked, and the animal messengers. Then I email it off for the human to enjoy forever.
I end the session “officially” by blowing out the candle. I then let a dog outside, pick up a pair of kid’s underwear in the hallway, go pluck a chin hair, and plan dinner. So mysterious, right?
